Fred Cameron | Biography
Fred Cameron’s portfolio is comprised of a variety of subjects,
from rugged mountain landscapes to English country gardens, from still
lifes to nudes and wildlife. Not an artist to be easily categorized,
he’s interested in all facets of subject manner.
If there is a common thread that runs throughout his paintings it is
a sensitivity to light and dark, shadow and sunshine, warm and cool
colours; all captured with his energetic brushstrokes.
Born and still living in a rural area of B.C.’s Fraser Valley
his love for the outdoors is reflected in his many landscapes. Fred
resides there with his wife Arlene, who takes care of the business side
of his art and studio. Although his subjects vary widely, he admits
his favourite place to paint is plein air. To escape the studio is very
important to him, only then can you experience the true light, the impact
of one colour next to another; the values and richness, or the subtleties.
Fred’s impressionistic paintings are appreciated the world over,
hanging in collections throughout Canada, United States, England, New
Zealand, Australia and China.
Cameron’s love of capturing the visual world began at an early
age with an attraction to drawing. His family’s inability to send
him to art school only fueled his appetite to search out the very best
artists. Exposing himself to the masters in museums, galleries and a
large library of art books and videos has become a life long passion.
At a very early stage of his introduction into oils he was fortunate
to meet up and paint with many of America’s top impressionists
and colourists.
Fred considers himself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to
paint with and be strongly influenced by an elite group of impressionists
including Wm Reese of Washington, Ned Jacob of Maine and Russian artist
Ovanes Berberian.
Fred was the first Canadian to be selected as a finalist from over 2000
submissions in the Arts in the Parks Compton in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
He has placed in the top 200 many times.
Fred enjoys other media as well, he is a past member of the Pastel Society
of Canada, and is also an accomplished sculptor, with three limited
edition bronzes to date and many more in the works.
